A popular Singaporean cryptocurrency exchange is hosting a first-of-its-kind non-fungible token (NFT) art exhibition with pieces from Andy Warhol and Beeple.
A new exhibition called “Right Click + Save” has been launched by Singaporean restaurant-cum-art concept establishment Appetite, in partnership with Singaporean crypto exchange, Coinhako.
The collection features early artistic expressions from the cryptocurrency industry and showcases the visual culture of crypto communities. This particular exhibition was curated by an employee Clara Che Wei Peh, the art lead at Appetite, and the founder of the online community called NFT Asia.
NFT
The exhibition includes Untitled (Flower) by Andy Warhol, ALIVE by Michael Joseph Winkelmann, better known as Beeple, Machine Hallucinations: Synthetic Mars Terrain by Refik Anadol, and Robert Alice’s Portraits of a Mind, among others. Andy Warhol’s work is from approximately 1985, recovered from floppy disks in 2014, and minted as an NFT in 2021.
The exhibition is being held at Fine Art Storage Services at La Freeport, and Appetite only allows viewing of “Right Click + Save” by appointment. The exhibition will run from Nov 7-14, 2021. The works on show are loans from collectors and artists and fill four rooms at the facility.
The showcase piece, a single work named “Doge To The Moon” will include an NFT and physical figurine. The auction for this piece will start on Nov 11 with a starting bid of $260,000.
Beeple’s work, HUMAN ONE, a 3-D video sculpture netted $28.9M from a Swiss bidder on Nov 9 at a Christie’s auction. The kinetic video sculpture featured dystopian imagery and is accessed through the Ethereum blockchain.
Art gallery or restaurant?
Coinhako has more than 300,000 users in Singapore, and this joint-exhibition effort is its first foray into the NFT space.
Appetite was conceived by the Michelin-starred Nouri restaurant’s research and development department in 2018. The facility is part art gallery, part restaurant, with a listening room that plays vinyl records.
The 2,000 sq. ft facility is designed to be informal and relational and was founded by chef Ivan Brehm. Appetite’s team curates novel exhibitions that showcase artists whose works are mostly unheard of in Singapore.
